We have two levels for the wrestlers to compete in, Novice and Advanced. Novice is defined as 1st and 2nd year wrestlers that have not placed top three in an open tournament. Novice can compete in advanced events; advanced wrestlers may not compete in novice events. These wrestlers will compete in controlled "roll arounds" and will have a Novice Championship at the end of the season. Novice wrestlers can also compete in open tournaments throughout the season. Talk to your coaches to determine if your wrestler is ready to compete in open tournaments and to assure that there will be coaches at given events.
Advanced wrestlers will be split between Elementary and Middle School Divisions. The cutoff date is Nov. 1st, 10yrs and younger is elementary / 11 - 14yrs is middle school division.
Team Smyrna
We also support a travel team that competes throughout the Mid-Atlantic region in All Star dual meets. This group practices with the advanced squad and may at times wrestle in the Upper Chesapeake events. The lineup is determined by wrestle offs.
Upcoming events:
Saturday Nov. 15th (noon) – Kurt Howell’s Father – Son Clinic, this is a great opportunity for our novice wrestlers and novice fathers to get on the mat and learn from the best! No fee, please sign up at practice so that we know how many participants to expect.
Saturday Nov 22nd (noon) – Wrestle offs for the UCWL East All Star Team. We are pulling together a squad to represent the East in the UCWL East vs UCWL West All Star Match to be held on Nov. 29th at John Carroll High School. This will be straight weight: 51, 56, 61, 66, 71, 76, 81, 86, 91, 96, 101, 106, 113, 121, 131, 141, 151 (17). The teams representing the East will be Caesar Rodney, Chesapeake Bay Wrestling (Kent Island), Kent, Newark, Perryville, North East, North Wilmington, Rising Sun and Smyrna.
Saturday Nov. 29th (~5:30pm) - UCWL All-Star match will be held on Nov. 29th at John Carroll High School.
Sunday Nov. 30th - Wrestle offs for Advanced squad and Practice Tournament for Novice kids. All kids weigh in at 8:00am and wrestling should begin at 9:00. The Delaware Wrestling Officials Association will be there at 9:00 to officiate the matches; they are using this as a training opportunity for their new referees - so be gentle with them...
In house Practice Tournament - We will not necessarily run the practice tournament to completion, this is more to help the kids and parents understand what to expect at a tournament and will conclude at 1:00pm. The below link will give you an overview of what to expect at a tournament. www.eteamz.com/smyrnalittlewrestlers/news/index.cfm?cat=358439
Advanced Wrestle Offs - The primary purpose of this wrestle off is to establish the lineup for the Mid Atlantic Duals (Dec. 7th). It will also allow us to start hashing out a depth chart for the league matches. We generally take two or three wrestlers per weight to the league quad events. If you are not able to attend the wrestle offs, please let me know via email so I can schedule challenge matches.
Saturday Dec 6th - Smyrna Little Wrestlers Tournament.
Sunday Dec. 7th – Mid Atlantic Duals (Team Smyrna)
Friday Dec. 12th – Novice Roll Around 6:00pm @ Newark H.S.
Saturday Dec. 13th – Keystone Duals (Team Smyrna)
